Pelican Lecture

Rudy Gelis posing with bird on shoulder

The Biology Department sponsors a Bi-annual lecture in honor of Dr. Ralph Schreiber.  Dr.  Schreiber was a graduate of the College of Wooster, noted for his work on seabirds, including pelicans.  His parents, the late Clare Adel and William Schreiber, were long term residents of and contributors to the Wooster Community and endowed this lecture in Ralph’s memory.

The 2011 Pelican Lecture

"What’s on the Menu? Ecuadorian Birds and What They Eat” Presented by Rudy Gelis.

Rudy is a professional naturalist and bird guide whose tour company, Pluma Verde, specializes in small, personalized birding trips in Ecuador and Peru. He is a graduate of Berea College, in Kentucky. Upon graduation, he was awarded a Watson Fellowship for a post-graduation “wanderjahr.” He has lived in Ecuador for over 10 years. In that time, he has worked as a naturalist for various ecotourism lodges, and has pursued research projects with other biologists on nesting behaviors and reproductive biology of a variety of Ecuadorian birds.

Rudy has been active in helping to train Ecuadorians as bird guides, and in guiding them to undertake long-term data collection methodologies to document and to track Ecuadorian biodiversity. Last summer, Rudy traveled with the Wooster Summer in Ecuador program, where he helped to introduce 12 energetic Wooster students to the biology of the tropics.

This most recent lecture took place Wednesday, April 27, 2011 - 8:00pm in Gault Recital Hall Scheide Music Center, Corner of University Street and Beall Ave., Wooster, OH 44691.

Admission always free and open to the public.
