Merit Scholarships

The College of Wooster requires that all students interested in applying for a Competition-Based Scholarship and/or Performance Based Scholarship complete the appropriate online scholarship application form by January 15. All applicants will be automatically considered for a Dean's Scholarship and do not need to submit an extra application for the scholarships.

Dean’s Scholarship

Receive up to $20,000 per year
All applicants for admission are automatically considered and recipients are awarded based upon overall academic achievement, extra-currricular involvement, leadership, and personal merit.
Requirements: Completed application for admission must be submitted by February 15.

Competition-Based Scholarships

College Scholar Award

Up to $25,000 per year (this scholarship replaces a Dean's Scholarship)
Winners are determined on the basis of overall academic achievement (GPA, ACT/SAT score, competition essay), extra-curricular involvement, leadership, personal merit, and recommendations, and scholarship essay.
Requirements: Completed application for admission and College Scholar essay by January 15. Admissions Interview is required by February 1 (does not need to be an on-campus interview).
Recommended mininum: Top 15% of class, ACT of a 29/SAT of a 1950

Clarence Beecher Allen Scholarship

Up to $25,000 per year (this scholarship replaces a Dean's Scholarship)
Awards are made to African-American students on the basis of overall academic achievement, Allen essay competition, and participation in an on-campus scholarship event.
Requirements: Completed application for admission and Allen essay must be submitted by January 15. Participation in the Allen Weekend on February 17-18.

Covenant Scholarship

$1,000 or $3,000 per year (this scholarship is in addition to the Dean's Scholarship, if applicable)
Must be a member of the Presbyterian Church (USA) and have demonstrated academic achievement and involvement in one’s community and church. Children of Presbyterian ministers will be considered for the greater dollar amount.
Requirements: Completed application for admission submitted by January 15. Letter of recommendation from a minister or youth minister.
Notifiction mailed by April 1

Performing Arts Scholarships
(awarded in the areas of Music, Theatre & Dance, and Scottish Arts)

$2,000 to $8,000 (awarded in addition to a Dean's Scholarship, if applicable)
Awarded on the basis of accomplishment and promise in music, theatre, dance, or the Scottish Arts. Students receiving the award need not major in the area, but are required to participate in performance programs while at Wooster.

The maximum merit award amount is $30,000 awarded annually. Prospective students are welcome to apply for more than one Competition-Based Scholarship, but they will only receive one. Competition-Based Scholarships replace any Dean’s Scholarship, except for Covenant Scholarships which are in addition to a Dean's Scholarship. All Wooster scholarships are automatically renewed each year as long as the student maintains full-time enrollment and remains in good academic standing. Scholarship amounts listed may change. All admission and scholarship deadlines are postmarked deadlines.
