College Scholar Award

Instructions

Students wishing to apply for the College Scholar Award, must submit their completed application for admission, online scholarship application, and scholarship essay by January 15. An interview with an admissions representative must be completed by February 1. If you have not already had an interview, please schedule on campus interview, contact your admissions officer to arrange a phone/skype interview, or email to arrange an interview with an alumni admissions advocate (request for the interview must be made by Monday, January 21).

Essay Questions

Please select one:

  1. Why do people tell stories?
  2. New communication technologies (social media, cell phones, instant messaging, email, etc.) enable us to be more accessible. Do these technologies connect or disconnect our population? Explain.
  3. Imagine that a new device can download information into your brain. If Wooster offered to download the content of all its courses into your mind in one afternoon for the same cost as four years of tuition, would you take that option?

No limits are placed on the length, but submissions should be at least two type-written pages. A cover page with the student´s name, high school, scholarship name, and the topic number needs to accompany the essay.

Evaluation

Because The College of Wooster curriculum emphasizes the importance of writing, your work will be evaluated in terms of how well you demonstrate thoughtful arguments, intellectual imagination, audience awareness, and engaging prose, as well as clarity, concision, and accuracy of language.  Your essay will be read and graded by members of the College faculty. The admissions committee will consider the essay score, academic achievement, extra-curricular involvement, leadership and personal merit. Scholarship designations will be made by a combination of these two evaluations.
