Scottish Arts Scholarship
Applicants for the awards must submit both their application for admission to The College of Wooster and the Scottish Arts Scholarship Application form by January 15 and audition for the scholarship.
Audition Information
An audition can be done in person or via an audio or video recording. A panel of Scottish Arts experts will judge the performance and make all decisions.
The dates for those interested in the 2013 auditions are January 25-26 and February 15-16, 2013.
Recordings should be received by January 25, 2013. Special audition times may be arranged by contacting Donna Reed 330-263-2419.
Pipers
Be prepared to play selections of your choice from the following:
- 2/4 March Strathspey & Reel
- 4/4 March Hornpipe & Jig
- Slow March Pibroch (optional)
Dancers
Be prepared to perform two of the following, as chosen by the panel of judges:
- Lilt
- Sword Dance
- Seann Triubhas
- Strathspey & Reel optional dance
Dancers should provide their own accompaniment on CD.
Drummers
Be prepared to perform the following:
- Scottish style drum rudiments (chosen by judges)
- Drum setting for traditional tunes
- A drum solo (optional)
Additionally, be prepared to discuss tuning, sticking techniques, characteristic Scottish style accents, and other aspects of Scottish drumming which distinguish it from traditional non-Scottish drumming.
Requirements
Winners of the awards are expected to participate with the Scot Band during the fall and spring semesters, including the annual Spring Tours. All students who earn scholarships are expected to study privately with the appropriate instructor. Pipers, Dancers, and Drummers are also, as appropriate, expected to assist in the recruitment and training of on-campus instructees. One of the considerations for award selectees will be potential for leadership qualities. Experience with a pipe band, Highland dance organization, or in competition, may be another criterion.
