John Carroll Edges Wooster 85-82 Despite Wenz's Career-High 35 Points

Behind senior guard Kym Wenz and her career-high 35 points, The College of Wooster came back from an early nine-point deficit to take a three-point lead late in the game, but John Carroll University was able to edge out the Fighting Scots in the waning minutes to notch an 85-82 win in a shootout at Timken Gymnasium. Following a season in which Kym Wenz scored over 18 points per game and earned all-region accolades, the senior guard is now garnering preseason attention, as she was named to the D3hoops.com Preseason All-America Team as a fourth-team selection. The announcement was made recently on the popular Div. III basketball Web site. Complete Story

Program Overview

Basketball was the first women’s varsity sport at Wooster, starting play in 1965, and has built a reputation as a competitive team within the region. A member of the North Coast Athletic Conference, the Scots are typically battling for a spot among the top-half of the parity-filled league, which makes for many exciting, closely-played games.

Several outstanding individual players have come through the program from Alpha Alexander, a 1976 graduate who was named one of NCAA’s “100 Most Influential Student-Athletes,” and fellow “W” Association Hall-of-Famers Barb Davis (1982-86), Lisa Diment Panepento (1983-87), and Christy Evans (1988-92), who played key roles in leading the Scots to their two NCAC championships in 1985 and 1990, to more recent stars, such as Katie Montague (1995-99), Nara DeJesus (1999-03), Carly Loehrke (2003-07), and Kym Wenz (2006-10).

Wooster plays and practices at spacious Timken Gymnasium, a 3,400-seat facility. The Scots’ schedule features the annual Nan Nichols Classic, a tournament to honor the program’s long-time coach (1965-86) and a pioneer for women’s athletics, and it also typically features an exciting road trip, including visits to Boston, Los Angeles, New York City, and Washington, D.C., in recent seasons, all in preparation for the NCAC.
