Women's Golf to Become Varsity Sport at Wooster

Danch named acting coach

WOOSTER, Ohio – The College of Wooster will add women’s golf as a varsity sport, with the team scheduled to begin competition in the 2010-11 academic year. It is the first new sport at Wooster since the spring of 2000, when softball bumped up from club to varsity status.

“We’re very excited to announce the addition of a 23rd sport, elevating our varsity sport offerings to 12 for women,” stated Keith Beckett, the school’s director of athletics, physical education, and recreation. “Also, Wooster will be the fifth women’s golf team in the North Coast Athletic Conference, and consequently, we’re hopeful that the sport will now conduct an official conference championship.”

Currently, there are 167 NCAA Div. III institutions that sponsor women’s golf, including 36 within the Great Lakes Region. In the NCAC, Allegheny College, Denison University, Hiram College, and Wittenberg University have teams.

Rich Danch, the head coach of the Fighting Scots’ men’s golf team, will serve as the acting coach of the women’s program throughout the current recruiting season. A finalized coaching staff as well as an official home course and 2010-11 schedule will be announced later.
