Frequency Dependence of Thresholds in the Modulated Phase of 5CB:

This project deals with the electric field induced orientational transitions in the bend Freedericksz geometry under the action of a stabilizing magnetic field. In the Nematic Liquid Crystal 5CB periodic instabilities or stripes can appear in the presence of a magnetic field parallel to the initial director (Z axis) and a sufficiently large electric field applied perpendicular to the initial director (along X axis). These stripes when they first appear at a threshold, can be parallel to the E field (X stripes) or perpendicular (Y stripes) depending on the electric field frequency. As the E field is ramped up beyond the threshold, the stripes become continuously tilted in the xy plane (XY stripes) and eventually disappear at a high electric field. In the stripe-free phase the director is aligned homogeneously along the E field.
