Teach For America
Teach For America is the national corps of outstanding recent graduates of all academic majors who commit two years to teach in urban and rural public schools and become lifelong leaders in an effort to eliminate educational inequity.
U.S. Peace Corps
The Peace Corps traces its roots and mission to 1960, when then-Senator John F. Kennedy challenged students at the University of Michigan to serve their country in the cause of peace by living and working in developing countries. From that inspiration grew an agency of the federal government devoted to world peace and friendship. Since that time, more than 170,000 Peace Corps Volunteers have been invited by 136 host countries to work on issues ranging from AIDS education, information technology, and environmental preservation.
City Year Columbus
An Action Tank for national service, City Year seeks to demonstrate, improve and promote the concept of national service as a means for building a stronger democracy. An 'action tank' is both a program and a 'think tank' - constantly combining theory and practice to advance new policy ideas, make programmatic breakthroughs, and bring about major changes in society. City Year Columbus is looking for dedicated, diverse 17-24 year olds to complete a demanding year of community service, leadership development and civic engagement. Working on teams, Corps Members serve as mentors and tutors to elementary and middle school children, run after-school programs and teach curricula. Members also plan and implement physical service and environmental projects.
Humility of Mary Volunteers
Humility of Mary Volunteers "bring life-giving service and love to people who are poor, weak and oppressed." Length of service is typically one year, with the option to renew for a second. Some sites may offer different time frame opportunities depending on the site, the year, and work availability. Volunteers will be assisted in choosing their program with the help of the director of the volunteer program.
