Mini Grants

Description

Students are invited to apply for funding from APEX to support academic year experiences related to vocational exploration and career development. Individuals or groups of four or more may apply. When applying, please consider the following:

  • Grant proposals will be accepted on a rolling basis throughout the 2012-13 academic year, but must be submitted at least 14 days prior to when they are needed.  Last day to submit an application: April 26, 2013
  • The intent of the grant is to explore new vocational opportunities, therefore, reimbursement for monies already spent will generally not be considered.
  • Grants awarded to seniors must be used prior to graduation.
  • Funds must be used, reimbursed, and reported by June 21, 2013.

Definition & Purpose

As we use the term vocational exploration in APEX, we focus on the notion of developing one’s talents and capabilities to good-effect in choosing and enjoying a meaningful career. The intent of the mini grants is to provide students the opportunity to explore vocational interests that without funding might go undeveloped.

Eligibility

Open to First Year, Sophomore, Junior and Senior students in all majors who are in

  • good academic standing
  • good standing under The College of Wooster’s Codes of Academic Integrity and Social Responsibility

Amount of Award

Up to $250 for an individual; up to $750 for a group of 4 or more

Project Proposals

Please see the application for exact proposal requirements. Proposals should:

  • Identify what is missing from the individual’s or group’s vocational aspirations
  • Propose vocational exploration questions that will be examined over the course of the project
  • Outline a plan for integrating the results at the conclusion.
  • Wherever possible, an on-campus component based on what was learned from the project should be included

Project Mentoring

All proposals must be accompanied with support from an on-campus mentor through the Mentor Support Form.  Mentors may be faculty members or members of the professional staff at the College.

Examples of Past Mini Grant Projects

Mini Grant projects can occur within an almost infinite number of forms. To give an idea how Mini Grants can be crafted, consider these examples from past projects:

  • Eight students attended InterVarsity Christian Fellowship’s Mission Conference (Urbana).  The focus of Urbana is to help students explore short and long-term vocational opportunities offered by more than 300 missions agencies and educational institutions.
  • Five students in the Community Art Connection visited New York City for an exploration of opportunities in the arts. They engaged in a variety of unique experiences which provided them with insight about different paths they can take working in the arts after college.
  • One student attended the poetry section of the Kenyon Review’s Writers’ Workshop. During the week the student participated in an intensive study of reading, writing, and discussing original poetic pieces.

Selection and Notification

All applications will be reviewed by the Mini Grants committee.  Applicants will be notified of their acceptance status within two weeks of receipt of complete application materials (i.e., including receipt of all financial verification).
