Select Service Programs

Before joining a service corps there are questions to ask of yourself and the program.

AmeriCorps has three different types of service commitments:

  1. AmeriCorps State and National: Direct service, in nonprofits, schools and government agencies. Length of Service: 1700 hours or approximately one year
  2. AmeriCorps VISTA: Indirect service in nonprofits , schools, and government agencies. Emphasis on policy issues, ending poverty and capacity building. Length of Service: one year
  3. AmeriCorps NCCC: Residential, team-based, travel to sites throughout the region. Direct service. Length of Service: 10 months

City Year involves direct service in nonprofits, schools, and government agencies. Emphasis on youth and also physical service. Length of Service: 1700 hours in 10 months

Teach for America has a focus on education, specifically “eliminating education inequity.” Length of Service: Two years

Peace Corps focuses on education, community development, business development, environment, agriculture, health, HIV/AIDS, technology. Length of Service: 24-27 months

Catholic Network of Volunteer Service Programs are available in all fifty states and over 100 countries. Length of Service: Varies depending on programs

Humility of Mary Volunteers Volunteers will be assisted in choosing their program from sites in several different states. Length of Service: Varies depending on the site and work availability

Jesuit Volunteer Corps are committed to community, social justice, simple living, and Christian spirituality. Programs are in all 50 states and six countries: Length of Service: one year

Lutheran Volunteer Corps is a national volunteer service program. It is for people who want to explore their spirituality while working for social justice, living in intentional community with other volunteers, and practicing sustainability in all aspects of their lives. Length of Service: one year

Mercy Home is a children's catholic charity in Chicago, IL. Length of Service: one year

PC (USA) Young Adult Volunteers in communities of need in the United States and around the world. Length of Service: one year

Conservancy of Cuyahoga Valley National Park Field Instructor interns serve in the resident environmental education program at the Environmental Education Center in Cleveland, Ohio. Length of Service: 10 months
