My teaching and writing are focused on the politics of contemporary literature, and of Native literature in particular. I'm working on a book, now, that explores this in the theater of post-relocation Minneapolis - a city whose vibrant history of Ojibwe, Dakota, and Pan-Tribal writing challenges easy assumptions about its whiteness, its (sub)urbanity, and even its Americanness. What excites me the most about this project is precisely this sense of challenge or confrontation. How an often-overlooked tradition of Native writing pushes us toward better accounts of broadly influential ideas: modernism and modernity, nationalism and democracy, American and Native cultural continuities.
