National Wildlife Federation
They offer a Campus Ecology Fellowship for students attending college in Michigan, Ohio, Wisconsin, Indiana, Minnesota, or Chicago. If chosen the student has certain responsibilities throughout the year, including communicating with other schools and holding quarterly meetings. It runs for 2 semesters and takes about 10 hours weekly.
CDC Collegiate Leaders in Environmental Health
This is a 10-week long summer internship for undergraduate students majoring in Chemistry, Biology, Ecology, Environmental Studies, Engineering, or other related fields. It takes place in Atlanta, Georgia. Housing is not provided, but you receive a $500 stipend for housing weekly. Interns will participate in environmental health projects, interact with federal officials and scientists, and visit important environmental health sites in Atlanta.
Smithsonian Environmental Research Center
Offers a 10-16 week internship that is 40 hours a week. Individuals will devote most of their time to a project and content area of particular interest to them. Students will have the opportunity to expand their knowledge in a selected field of study and to learn a variety of research techniques through firsthand experience. At the conclusion of the internship, student participants will be expected to present the findings of their independent projects in a formal seminar to the SERC community. There are also spring and winter internships available. Internships are available in a wide range of disciplines. There is limited on-site dormitory space for a fee per week and interns will receive a stipend of $425 per week. The center is located 30 miles east of Washington, D.C.
University Corporation for Atmospheric Research (UCAR) / National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR)
Offers internships in the summer, spring, and winter on engineering, computing, climate or weather while mentored by working professionals. Located in Boulder, CO.
Pacific Whale Foundation (Maui, Hawaii)
Seeking interns for our Marine Mammal Research Program. Pacific Whale Foundation is a non-profit organization dedicated to protecting whales and other marine life throughresearch, education, and conservation. Our researchers have studied whales and dolphins throughout the Pacific for over 29 years and we currently conduct projects in Hawaii, Australia and Ecuador.
Paint Rock Canyon Enterprises
Located in Hyattville, WY interns are welcome for the summer or semester. Your day may be spent building and repairing fence or moving cows on our BLM and Forest Services leases. You will play an integral part in the operations necessary for hay production. Each day is different and will offer multiple learning experiences that will challenge both your mind and your body. You will be provided housing and a generous stipend.
Interns gain hands-on experience working on independent projects in a non-profit setting, while learning important organizing skills. We are looking for people who are serious about saving the planet, have a desire to strengthen and grow the environmental movement, and have demonstrated leadership experience. Currently there are positions available in Boston and San Francisco.
Yestermorrow Design/Build School
They offer internships that last either six or twelve months, such as design/build intern and kitchen/garden intern. The school is located in Vermont and provides housing and possibly a stipend.
Lakes Environmental Association
LEA's summer internships are paid positions geared towards motivated and responsible college students with environmental or educational interests. Interns are required to complete a variety of tasks and work with many different individuals. The work environment is casual but busy and about 50-60 percent of the work is outdoors. Located in Bridgton, ME.
- Student Career Experience Program (SCEP): This component offers you valuable work experience directly related to your academic field of study. It provides formal periods of work and study while you are attending school. It requires a commitment from you, your school, and the employing Federal agency. You may be eligible for permanent employment conversion under this program after successfully completing your education and meeting work requirements.
- Student Temporary Experience Program (STEP): This component offers temporary employment that will enable you to earn a salary while continuing your studies. Appointments to jobs under this program can range from summer jobs to positions that can last for as long as you are a student. An agency, at their discretion, may establish academic and job performance standards that students must meet to continue in the program. There is no permanent employment conversion element under this program. Headquarters are located in Washington, D.C.
