Biography, Performance, and Research

Professor of Music, appointed 1990. B.Mus. (summa cum laude), Baldwin-Wallace College Conservatory of Music; M.Mus., Michigan State University; A.Mus.D. (with distinction), University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Has taught at several institutions in the Midwest before coming to Wooster. Primary research interest is American concert song. Baritone soloist on the CD entitled With Pipes and Voices (Arkay Records AR6150). Guest lecture-recitalist at Brown University’s festival to honor American composer Gordon Binkerd’s 80th birthday. Contributor to the 3rd edition of The New Grove Dictionary of Music & Musicians and the 2nd edition of The Grove Dictionary of American Music. Published composer and arranger whose works include over sixty songs for voice and piano, forty choral pieces, five cantatas, many piano solos, and compositions for large & chamber ensembles. Recent works include the song cycle Sleep Sound, premiered at the 2007 Ann Arbor Art Song Festival (where his art songs have often been performed); a set of choral part songs entitled A Rose and a Rose and a Rose, first performed in 2006 and yet again in 2010 & 2011 by the University of Nevada–Las Vegas Chamber Chorale; Encomium for symphonic wind ensemble, also premiered in 2007; Aftermath (for brass choir & percussion), written for and rendered by The Wooster Brass in 2010; and A Quartz Contentment—Four Part Songs (for SATB & piano), written for & recently premiered by The Wooster Chorus. Performance of Mi y’malel (for SATB) in 2010 by The Los Angeles Master Chorale. Edited and wrote keyboard realizations for the complete secular songs of founding father Francis Hopkinson. In 1975 awarded the Joseph H. Bearns Prize for Large-Scale Composition by Columbia University for Cantata No. 2: Faust Soliloquy for baritone and orchestra. Commissions from the North Dakota Music Teachers Association to compose Cantata No. 3: All Love Shall Sleep (medium voice & chamber ensemble) and the Choral Department of the University of Hawai’i–Manoa to write You Are the Beautiful Garland (for SATB unaccompanied). Guest composer at Baldwin-Wallace College Conservatory of Music’s Focus Festival of Contemporary Music in October 1999. Other performances of compositions on over a dozen college & university campuses across the country; at Chicago’s Orchestra Hall; and in Tokyo, Japan.
