Requirements in Music

The degree Bachelor of Arts in Music requires the completion of 12 to 15 course credits in music:

Music Theory — 5 courses

  • MUSC 10100: Theory I
  • MUSC 10200: Theory II
  • MUSC 20100: Theory III
  • MUSC 20200: Theory IV
  • MUSC 30100: Theory V

Music History — 3 courses

  • MUSC 21200: Music History I
  • MUSC 21300: Music History II
  • A period course or seminar in music history/literature; Department offerings will vary each semester.

Applied Music Lesson — 1 course

  • Private lessons in voice or instrument

Independent Study (I.S.) — 3 courses

  • MUSC 40100: Junior Independent Study (or Junior Recital)
  • MUSC 45100/45200: Senior I.S. Thesis (or Senior Recital)

Electives in Music — Up to 3 courses*

*Special Note: Music Theory 10100 and 10200 require concurrent enrollment in a quarter-credit Class Piano course (MUSC 18100/18200) unless the student places out of this requirement. For many students, one half (.5) of the music electives will be in Class Piano.
