WOOSTER, Ohio — See it, touch it, feel it, taste it…and learn more about it! That’s the goal of The College of Wooster’s annual Science Day, which will be held Saturday (April 2) from 1-4 p.m. in Taylor Hall (308 E. University St.).

From astronomy, biology, and chemistry to geology, neuroscience, and physics, Wooster students and faculty plan to give visitors of all ages a chance to immerse themselves in a variety of displays, exhibits, and experiments. “The event is part of a long tradition at the College to share our love for science with others in the community,” said John Lindner, professor of physics. “We want to let people explore things they are curious about and to experience the sciences hands-on.”

Highlights include an exercise in which young people will be able to wrap bones in Crayola clay to create fossils. There will also be a spectra demonstration that will illustrate the different light that materials give off and the origin of various colors. In addition, there will be an opportunity to create comets from dry ice and dirt, and, weather permitting, view sunspots through a telescope, as well as create liquid nitrogen ice cream, and “flubber” with Borax, glue, and water. There will also be cell membranes, exploding bubbles, spooling DNA, and even real brains to view and touch. Other highlights include a demonstration of how fluorescence is used to solve crimes, and a touch tank with live horseshoe crabs, sea stars, and other underwater life.

The three-hour session is free and open to the public, and no prior preregistration is required. Funding is provided by Wooster’s Student Government Association and Campus Council.

Additional information is available by phone (330-263-2478) or e-mail.
