Anita L. Allen, Henry R. Silverman Professor of Law and Professor of Philosophy, University of Pennsylvania Law School, will present at the 15th Annual Bell Distinguished Lectureship in Law on Thursday, April 12, at The College of Wooster. The free public lecture will begin at 7:30 p.m. in Lean Lecture Room of Wishart Hall (303 E. University St.). A dessert reception will precede the event.
Allen is an expert on privacy law, bioethics, and contemporary values, and is recognized for her scholarship about legal philosophy, women’s rights, and race relations. Allen received her B.A. from New College, her M.A. and Ph.D. from The University of Michigan, and her J.D from Harvard. She teaches courses on privacy and data protection, ethics, bioethics and torts.
In 2010, she was appointed by President Obama to the Presidential Commission for the Study of Bioethical Issues. Her books include Unpopular Privacy: What Must We Hide, Everyday Ethics: Opinion-Writing about the Things that Matter, Privacy Law and The New Ethics: A Guided Tour of the 21st Century Moral Landscape, Why Privacy Isn’t Everything: Feminist Reflections on Personal, and Uneasy Access: Privacy for Women in a Free Society. She also co-edited (with Milton Regan) Debating Democracy’s Discontent. Allen, who has written more than a 100 scholarly articles, has also contributed to popular magazines and blogs, and has frequently appeared on nationally broadcast television and radio programs.
She currently serves on the following professional committees: Association for Practical and Professional Ethics, Executive Committee; Electronic Privacy Information Center, Board of Advisors; Hastings Center, Fellow and Board Member; Maternity Care Coalition, Board Member; National Association of Women Lawyers, Judicial Evaluation Committee; Journal of Law, Medicine and Ethics, Editorial Board; and the West Philadelphia Alliance for Children, Chair, Board of Directors.
The Bell Distinguished Lectureship in Law was endowed in 1999 by Jennie M. Bell and Samuel H. Bell, a 1947 College of Wooster graduate and a Federal Judge of the United States District Court for the Northern District of Ohio. The purpose is to engage students, faculty, members of the legal profession, and members of the community in a legal issue that has broad implications for society. The Bells hope, by way of this lectureship, to bring the best minds of the legal profession to Wooster students and the local community. This lectureship also joins their long-held affection for the law and faith in the values derived from a liberal arts education.
