Hello, my name is Zac Sessa and I am a senior double major in Russian Studies and Mathematics. The title of my Junior I.S. was "Russian Postmodernism: An Examination of the False Reality of Soviet Ideology." I had originally planned to focus on the economic turmoil Russia faced following the dissolution of the Soviet Union; however, as I began my search for primary sources, the writings of contemporary Russian author Victor Pelevin fascinated me. Using Pelevin's works, my Junior I.S. examines the Soviet ideology and how the deconstruction of social constructs can lead to the foundations of an objective reality.
For my Senior I.S., I plan to incorporate both the Russian Studies and Mathematics fields into one larger project, one that pertains directly to a great interest of mine. Using different methods of mathematical combat modeling, I plan to compare analyze the strengths and weaknesses of the United States Special Forces (Green Berets) and the Russian (or Soviet) Spetsnaz (Special Forces). In doing so, I plan to also look at the transition of Spetsnaz throughout the 20th century as they underwent numerous changes during the Russian Revolution, Soviet Union, and the fall of the Soviet Union.
After spending the summer of 2013 working in a Russia, Ukraine, & Eurasia policy office in the Department of Defense, I have decided that following graduation I plan to attend the United States Army Officer Candidate School.
