Theatre and Dance
Major
The Theatre and Dance major consists of a minimum of 12 course credits. The Topics courses, Advanced Seminar and Senior Independent Study allow students to establish an area of emphasis in Theatre and Dance, including directing, design, acting, choreography, playwriting, history and theory.
Required foundational courses: 3 credits
- 101 The Written Text
- 102 The Visual Text
- 103 The Physical Text
Students must select two of the following four courses in History/Literature/Theory/ Criticism: 2 credits
- 201 Contemporary Dance History
- 202 Dance in World Cultures
- 244 Origins of Western Drama
- 246 Realism and Beyond
One additional course must be taken from the following History/Literature/Theory/ Criticism courses: 1 credit
- 242 African American Theatre History
- 245 Feminism and Theatre
- 248 Native American Performance
Students must select two 300 level Topics courses: 2 credits
- 301 Topics in The Written Text
- 302 Topics in The Visual Text
- 303 Topics in The Physical Text
Students must select one 400 level Advanced Seminar: 1 credit
- 441 Advanced Seminar in The Written Text
- 442 Advanced Seminar in The Visual Text
- 443 Advanced Seminar in The Physical Text
Independent Study 401, 451, and 452: 3 credits
Students choosing to include a Production component to their Senior IS must also take 121 Performance Practicum. Four sections (.250 credit each), with two sections taken under 121-2: Production/Management, for a total of one credit.
