(36) When the School Bell Rings: A Critical Analysis of the American School Experience - Megan Wereley, Department of Education
What is the purpose of public education? How do schools impact society? What role does education play in addressing some of today’s most pressing problems? This seminar will consider the role of public education in American society including a survey of major issues facing modern educational systems, efforts at school reform, and an understanding of the historical context that informs current school policy and purpose. Some topics for consideration include school choice, school finance, No Child Left Behind, teacher quality, high-stakes testing, bullying, tracking, special needs, multilingual education, and 21st century learning. Drawing from a variety of resources including film and authentic texts, students in this seminar will have the opportunity to consider these issues from multiple perspectives, work with others to produce informed oral presentations, and hone strong writing skills. Participants will also gain experience in using technology as they research, develop, and produce documentary-style examinations of selected issues related to course topics.
