(01) From “Downtown Abbey” to “Love Actually”: The Dynamics of British Culture - Ahmet Atay, Department of Communication
In this seminar we will explore British culture, try to make sense of British cultural identity, understand the role of cultural heritage, and examine issues of class, immigration, and aristocracy as they intersect with the depiction of England in media and other texts. By analyzing the interplay between tradition and cultural heritage in contemporary British culture, we will map the media and cultural landscape of England. We will focus on the British traditions, London and the countryside, popular music, film and visual arts, Agatha Christie’s film and TV adaptations, James Bond, Olympics, sport- fans and hooligans, British fashion and department stores, tea, colonization and immigration, and finally British television. We will examine these topics through mediated and visual representations.
