The Games People Play: A Study of Board, Card, Dice, and Video Games
(10) The Games People Play: A Study of Board, Card, Dice, and Video Games - Michelle Johnson, Department of Communication
A wide variety of board, card, dice, and video games will be examined from various perspectives. We will investigate the history of games, the function of games, the effects of games, theories of games, game strategies, and the interactions that occur while playing games. We will also discuss the role of games in human, social, and cultural development. Where did our games originate? What purpose do games serve? Why do people play games? How have games changed over the years? This seminar will utilize readings and materials from a variety of disciplines such as history, psychology, business, sociology, and communication. Assignments will include a series of papers, peer-critiques, class presentations, and the development and playing of games. As noted above, the primary focus of the seminar will be board, card, dice, and video games, but we will also discuss athletic games from time to time. Let the games begin.
