Music and Politics from Plato to the iPod

(06) Music and Politics from Plato to the iPod - Timothy Freeze, Department of Music

What is the political significance of music? How have different governmental regimes and political circumstances influenced the production and performance of music?  Can music without a text be political?  Do the political implications of a piece of music remain stable or change through time?  In this seminar, students will examine the interrelationship of music and politics in a series of case studies that range from Antiquity to the Digital Age and include examples from classical, popular, and folk repertoires.  No prior musical experience is required. Possible topics include:

  • Beethoven and the Wars of Napoleon
  • Marian Anderson and the Civil Rights Movement
  • The Politics of Hip Hop
  • Music and 9/11
