Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI)

In May 2008, The College of Wooster was awarded a four-year, $1,000,000 grant from the Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI) Undergraduate Science Education Program to build on our rich history of undergraduate research and its recent advances in science education, facilitated by previous HHMI funding.

The overarching goal of the new program is to use HHMI support to strengthen undergraduate science education by building bridges between scientific disciplines, with particular emphasis on integrating the quantitative and physical sciences with the life sciences. Integrative approaches to undergraduate science education can establish the foundation for cross-disciplinary work, which is becoming increasingly essential for solving the biomedical problems of today and the future.

Wooster’s HHMI-supported program seeks to build bridges between scientific fields by establishing intensive interdisciplinary summer research experiences for undergraduates, revising and developing curricula that integrate the physical and life sciences, and building a “conduit of mentoring” that reaches from pre-college to post-doctoral training. Our plan is to integrate proven techniques in science education with innovative interdisciplinary approaches that will attract a diverse student population and enable them to both experience and contribute to the excitement of scientific discovery.

The application deadline on-campus research for summer 2013 has passed. Students may browse some off-campus research positions.
