Independent Minds, Working Together

English and Other Literature

Project Description:

By serving as an assistant editor for Artful Dodge, a nationally-distributed magazine of new American writing, graphics and literature in translation, my research assistant will help in a number of important activities, including maintaining the submissions log, reading and evaluating manuscripts, further work on the design and development of the magazine's web-site and other on-line content, editorial and promotional copy-writing, and typesetting and proofreading. The position will also involve the examination of other literary magazines and their web-sites and social media presence in order to understand better the context in which Artful Dodge publishes and promotes its own work. As time allows, the assistant will also aid in the transcription of field tapes and recorded interviews from my ongoing work in various creative nonfiction projects involving "literature of place," a combination of travel- and nature-writing.

Skills / Classes Required:

I'm looking for students with an interest and background in current literature and publishing, including coursework in creative writing. Students also should have strong writing and proofreading skills. Although prior experience working with web-sites and other digital media is not totally necessary, the position will require someone who is a "quick study" in this regard.
