Clarence Beecher Allen ScholarshipA Place of Studies for AllThe first black student, Clarence Beecher Allen, entered The College of Wooster in the 1880s, and the College continues to be inspired by his achievements. Today, approximately four percent of Wooster's student body is African American, and Wooster’s graduates have entered the fields of medicine, law, business, ministry, education, government, and social services. In 1988, Wooster's Board of Trustees created the Clarence Beecher Allen Scholarship to be awarded based on academic merit. These scholarships commemorate the achievements of Wooster´s first black graduate. Clarence Beecher Allen Scholarship ExaminationClarence Beecher Allen scholars are African American students selected based on outstanding intellectual achievement and academic potential in the scholarship essay competition and their high school record. To compete for the Allen scholarship students must submit one of the following essays by January 1, 2009. Responses must be typed, double-spaced and no more than 1,000 words and accompanied by a cover page which lists your name and topic selection. Included on each page, in the upper right-hand corner, should be your last name and topic number.
