Services & Facilities

Slide Library

In addition to the slide collection, the Slide Library has a number of services and facilities available for the Department of Art and the college community. If you are interested in any of these services, please contact the Visual Resources Curator at extension 2414.

Slide Commission Requests

The addition of images to the Slide Library is still offered, although we are shifting more to a digital focus. These additions are made within the budget and staffing constraints and the needs of the Department of Art.

Specific images can be requested by filling out a Slide Request form, available from the Visual Resources Curator. These requests are subject to the Curator's approval and cannot be for personal (that is, non-academic) use.

Because of the time and expense involved in slide creation, all slides become property of the Slide Library.

Slide Scanning and Digital Services

An exciting range of digital services is now available, including 2 searchable databases of digital images and digital classroom presentation tools. Presently, we have a slide scanner (Nikon Super CoolScan) and a flatbed scanner. Please contact us if you have interest in using these services.

The Madison Digital Imaging Database (MDID)

MDID is our Digital asset management tool for large collections of digital images. This database is hosted on our server, so students and instructors have 24 hr access to images, image groups for reference, and presentations. Also, you no longer have to worry about losing your images to aging slide film, or loss of your digital image collections through computer failure. MDID is a great way to organize and protect your collection, to present your lectures, and to provide reference to students. There is also an image viewer, which is far more powerful than Powerpoint, and features enhanced zoom capabilities.

Artstor

Artstor is a subscription service with access to over 500,000 images, and counting. It provides features similar to those of MDID, but with the added advantage of side by side comparisons of images, also one can upload images from MDID into personal image files in Artstor and supplement images groups for specific classes. Artstor is available through the libraries website.
