In their final tune-up before the 24th annual North Coast Athletic Conference Championships, The College of Wooster cross country teams will host the Wooster Relays Wednesday, Oct. 17. The annual meet, now in its eighth year, is a unique non-scoring event, with individuals from Fighting Scot head coach Dennis Rice’s alma mater, Edinboro University, as well as his current Wooster squads racing four different distances and then adding up their times for an individual finish. The women's race, which starts at 4:45 p.m., will consist of 2000 meters, 600 meters, 800 meters, and 1000 meters, with a seven-minute break between each, for a total of 4400 meters, while the men's portion is scheduled to begin 45 minutes later and will be a 6800-meter race with intervals of 2000, 1000, 800, and 3000 meters.

Last Week: On Oct. 12, the Scots produced the top-eight runners in both the men’s and women’s competition, as Wooster swept the three-team Jim Bean Cross Country Invitational.

Eleven of the Scots’ men’s harriers crossed the finish line before anybody else, scoring the minimum 15 points, while Lake Erie College (60) edged Hiram College (65) for second-place. Both sophomore Terry Workman (Hillsboro, Ohio / Greenfield McClain) and senior Rudy Gilman (Silverton, Ore. / Silverton Union) finished the 5K in 16:25, but it was Workman who edged Gilman for the individual victory. Rounding out Wooster’s scorers was sophomore Rick Workman (Hillsboro, Ohio / Greenfield McClain) in third (16:44), sophomore Jeff Jacobs (Wilmette, Ill. / New Trier Twp.) in fourth (17:00), and junior Bryan Loy (Oxford, Ohio / Talawanda) in fifth (17:19).

The women also ran a 5K and the Scots were just as dominant, equaling their male counterparts with the minimum 15 points. Hiram was the runner-up (61), followed by Lake Erie (65). Freshman Suzanne Capehart (Oak Hill, Va. / Oakton) paced the 28-member field with a time of 19:33, nearly a full minute ahead of the runner-up – senior teammate Erin Fortin (Fernandina Beach, Fla. / Neuqua Valley – Ill.) in 20:25. Next for Wooster was freshman Chelsea Fisher (Metuchen, N.J. / Metuchen), freshman Jessica Yarmosky (Pittsfield, Mass. / Monument Mountain), and junior Anna Gill (San Francisco, Calif. / Lick-Wilmerding), who placed third (20:47), fourth (20:48), and fifth (21:08), respectively.
