The College of Wooster men’s and women’s cross country teams will take part in the annual Great Lakes Colleges Association Championships for the first time in three years this Saturday, Sept. 8. The nine-team meet is being hosted by Kenyon College and consists of a women’s 5K race at 10 a.m. and a men’s 8K run, beginning at 10:45 a.m. In addition to Kenyon and Wooster, Albion College, Denison University, Earlham College, Kalamazoo College, Oberlin College, Ohio Wesleyan University, and Wabash College are slated to compete for team and individual honors. The last time the Scots ran at the GLCA’s was 2004, when they finished in sixth- (men) and fifth-place (women) out of eight-team fields.

Last Week: On Aug. 31, freshman Suzanne Capehart (Oak Hill, Va. / Oakton) kicked off her collegiate cross country career in impressive fashion, leading Wooster with a runner-up showing at the Denison Fall Classic. No team scores were recorded at the season-opening meet. Capehart clocked in at 15:39 in the Classic’s 4000-meter race, just 24 seconds behind the winner (15:15). Two more first-years were next for the Scots, with Casey Henry (Louisville, Ky. / duPont Manual) and Chelsea Fisher (Metuchen, N.J. / Metuchen) in 15th (16:33) and 16th (16:34), respectively. Right behind them was senior Erin Fortin (Fernandina Beach, Fla. / Neuqua Valley – Ill.), who placed 17th (16:37), while freshman Jess Yarmosky (Pittsfield, Mass. / Monument Mountain) rounded out the top-five for Wooster, crossing in 22nd (16:51).

The men ran a four-mile event, with the Scots’ top finisher being sophomore Terry Workman (Hillsboro, Ohio / Greenfield McClain) as he came in fourth-place with a time of 21:37. Twin brother, Rick Workman (Hillsboro, Ohio / Greenfield McClain), was right on his heels, finishing sixth (21:55), and sophomore Jeff Jacobs (Wilmette, Ill. / New Trier Twp.), junior Bryan Loy (Oxford, Ohio / Talawanda), and sophomore Zane Shetler (North Canton, Ohio / Hoover) nabbed 16th (22:52), 17th (22:55), and 20th (23:15), respectively.
