At their first full length meet this fall, The College of Wooster men's and women's cross country squads opened with fourth- and seventh-place showings at the Great Lakes Colleges Association Championships, hosted Saturday (Sept. 13) by Earlham College in Richmond, Ind. The Wooster men scored 123 points in the 10-team race, just behind third-place Kenyon College (122), while Albion College won in impressive fashion with its five scorers all finishing among the top-eight for a total of 27 points, well ahead of runner-up DePauw University (70). In the women's division, the Scots tallied 166 points, just edged for sixth-place by Kalamazoo College (164), while Denison University was first (28). Wooster was led for the third-straight meet by senior Brendan Callahan, who came in fifth overall with a time of 27:14, and newcomer Katie Wieferich, who ran 19:50 to place sixth. After Callahan, Scot sophomore Taylor Delhagen ran 20th (28:01), making him the last award winner of the annual event. Classmates Chris Bender in 29th and Colin Turner in 30th followed Delhagen with respective times of 28:32 and 28:36, and Wooster's No. 5 harrier was junior Matt Linman, who finished the race in a time of 29:18, good for 43rd-place. Wieferich pulled the Scot women, while junior Lindsey Dieringer brought up the rest of the squad, coming in 35th overall with a time of 20:52. Senior captains Colleen Call and Karina Colbenson were Wooster's third and fourth runners, finishing 42nd (21:00) and 44th (21:02), respectively. The fifth-place point scorer was junior Erin Herl, who ran 21:42 to place 67th. The Scots have a weekend off and are next scheduled to compete on Saturday (Sept. 27) at their own course, as they host the annual Wooster Invitational. |
