Callahan, Wiefrich Win Individual Races to Start Season
Senior Brendan Callahan won in his first competition in a year for The College of Wooster, while freshman Katie Wieferich took first in the womens race during a successful debut for the cross country teams at Oberlin College late Friday afternoon (Aug. 29). It was a non-scoring tri-meet. Callahan, who took the 2002-03 academic year off, crossed the finish line of the mens four-mile event in 21:46, edging Oberlins Adam Greeney (21:47) in the field of 26 harriers. Woosters Taylor Delhagen was not far behind either, as the second-year harrier took third-place with a time of 21:55, while the Scots top-five also consisted of sophomore Colin Turner, junior Charlie Van Gombos, and senior Patick Wynee, who were fifth (22:11), seventh (23:07), and eighth overall (23:20), respectively. Wieferich looked like a star in the making during her first collegiate competition, beating out 53 others with a time of 15:49 in the 4K race. Her closest competitor was Julia Goeke of Oberlin, as she was the only other runner under the 16-minute mark (15:53). Senior Colleen Call and first-year Ashley Zervos came in third (16:37) and fourth (16:38), respectively, for the Scots, while other teammates in the top-10 were junior Erin Herl in sixth (16:40), junior Erin Jacob in eighth (16:43), senior Karina Colbenson in ninth (16:43), and sophomore Kathy McCreary in 10th (16:46). This Friday (Sept. 5), the Scots will host the first-ever Wooster Cross Country Festival at 6 p.m. |
