Brendan Callahan and Katie Wieferich won their races for the second-straight week, highlighting The College of Wooster’s results at the Wooster Cross Country Festival late Friday afternoon (Sept. 5). The first such meet was a unique event, as Allegheny College, Denison University, Kenyon College, and the host Scots divided each of their teams into two, thus forming four events — a men’s 3K and 5K and a women’s 3K and 5K.

Callahan cruised to a victory in the 3K with a time of 9:14, 33 seconds faster than his nearest competitor and teammate Colin Turner (9:47), while Wieferich’s win was much closer as she completed the 3K in 11:14 to edge Denison University’s Christine Collins (11:17).

Allegheny, the preseason favorite in the North Coast Athletic Conference, dominated the 5K events. The men’s race saw the top-three finishers be Gators, led by Kevin Pool in 15:58, while the women were more impressive, with the first 11 crossing the line haling from Allegheny, led by Leigh Ciofani (19:57).

Also finishing in the top-five of the men’s 3K for Wooster were Chris Taft and Zach Patterson in fourth (10:03) and fifth (10:29), respectively The team’s top finishers in the 5K were Taylor Delhagen, who came in eighth (16:56), and Charlie Van Gombos, who crossed ninth (16:58).

Notable Scots on the women’s side included Lindsey Dieringer’s ninth-place effort in the 3K (11:58) and Colleen Call’s 12th-place run in the 5K (21:06).

Wooster will compete in its first scored meet of the season next Saturday (Sept. 13) at the annual Great Lakes Colleges Association Championships, this year hosted by Earlham College.
