Matt Linman

Matt Linman took first-place at the Jim Beam Invite, leading Wooster to second in the team standings.

The College of Wooster men’s and women’s cross country teams each came in second place in the overall team standings at the Jim Bean Twilight Invitational held at Wooster. The Scot men finished with 39 points, 10 behind Denison University (29) and ahead of Notre Dame College (61) and Mount Union College (105). Denison slipped by the Scots for first in the women’s race, finishing with 28 points to Wooster’s 29. Mount Union came in last with 71 points in the women’s race. Individual honors went to the Big Red’s Christine Collins in the women’s 5K and Wooster’s Matt Linman for the men.

The women pushed Denison, the 17th-ranked team in Div. III, all the way to the finish line and came just one point short of tying the Big Red for first place. Sophomore Katie Wiefrich placed second with a time of 19:31, just nine seconds off the winner’s pace. The Scots placed four additional runners in the top-10 as Tiffany White (4th, 19:42), Erin Jacob (5th, 19:54), Lindsey Dieringer (8th, 20:24), and Erin Herl (10th, 20:51) all received points.

The men’s team claimed the top-two spots in their race as Matt Linman led the pack with a time of 16:01 followed just eight seconds later by teammate Taylor Delhagen. Other top scorers included Charlie Van Gombos in 8th (16:53), Colin Turner in 12th (17:15), and Zac Patterson in 16th (17:32).

The harriers will be at home on Wednesday, Oct. 20, for the Wooster Relays in a final tune up before the conference championships on Oct. 30.
