Harriers Open 2005 at Denison Fall Classic
The College of Wooster cross country teams opened 2005 on Friday (Sept. 2) at the non-scoring Denison Fall Classic hosted by Denison University in Granville, Ohio. Joining Wooster at the event were North Coast Athletic Conference foes Denison, Kenyon College, Oberlin College, and Ohio Wesleyan University. Junior Katie Wieferich began her season in impressive fashion, outdistancing the field in the 5K to capture first-place, completing the course in a time of 19:28, 39 seconds in front of the second-place finisher. It marks her first collegiate victory in the 5K. Joining Wieferich in the top-20 were a quintet of Scots, including sophomores Nicole Calderone and Cara Stoddard in 13th- (21:38) and 16th-place (21:50), respectively, with junior Emily Rackley sandwiched between the two in 15th (21:40). Emily Elderbrock was the top Wooster first-year to finish the race, crossing the line 19th (22:02) overall, just ahead of senior Kathy McCreary in 20th (22:04). On the men's side, freshmen Mark DeWine and Brian Loy led the Scots in the 5K, crossing the finish line in 18:14 and 18:22, good enough for 30th and 32nd, respectively, overall. Fellow first-year Paul Thompson also put on a good showing in his first intercollegiate event, finishing 38th with a time of 18:36. The men's and women's teams each ran 3200-meter races as well, with freshman Michael Cynkar and junior Kathryn Russell being the top Scot finishers in 12th- and 10th-place, respectively. Next up for the Scot harriers is the Wooster Invitational on Saturday, Sept. 17, to be held at L.C. Boles Memorial Golf Course. |
