Katie Wieferich coasted to her third individual win in as many meets during 2005, while leading The College of Wooster to a third-place finish (women’s division) at the five-team Big Red Invitational, hosted by Denison University on Friday. The Wooster men also finished in third, as part of a four-team group.
Running her initial 6K competition of the season, Wieferich completed the same course where the North Coast Athletic Conference Championships will be held at in 23 minutes flat, well ahead of Denison’s Elaine Binkley (23:34), who was the runner-up at last year’s conference meet. Wieferich’s victory paved the way for 70 team points, behind Denison (24) and Kenyon College (41) and ahead of Hiram College (130) and Heidelberg College (132).
The Scots’ four other scorers were all bunched together. Nicole Calderone crossed the finish line in 17th-place (25:49), while also in the top-20 was Emily Rackley in 19th (25:53). Cara Stoddard and Kathy McCreary were right behind, placing 21st (26:09) and 22nd (26:20), respectively.
In men’s action, Wooster scored 90 points to outdistance Hiram College (130), while the host Big Red (27) edged Kenyon (28) by a single point. Colin Turner covered the 8K event in 28:28, good for 13th-place, to lead the Scot individuals. Backing him up were Rudy Gilman in 17th (28:49), Colin Haverkamp in 19th (28:58), Bryan Loy in 20th (29:02), and Paul Thompson in 22nd (29:03).
Wooster will now gear up for one of its three biggest meets of the year – the All-Ohio Championships – which will be held next Friday in Delaware, Ohio.
