Game 2 - Grove City

Matt Mahaffey's 63-yard touchdown reception in the third quarter was the decisive score in Wooster's 10-3 victory over Grove City.
In a game reminiscent of the one played between the same two teams a year ago, the Scot football team improved to 2-0 on the season with a 10-3 victory in its home opener at John P. Papp Stadium.

Last season, the two teams were scoreless after regulation, as they battled through a torrential rain storm. Eventually, the Scots came away with a 7-6 overtime victory. This year, neither team mounted much offense, but it was Wooster that came up with the lone big play of the game.

With the game tied at 3-3 at the 5:20 mark of the third quarter, the Scots started with the ball at their own 20-yard line. Will Schober broke loose for a 17-yard gain, giving Wooster some breathing room. After an incomplete pass by quarterback Sean Malone, he went up top to wide receiver Matt Mahaffey, who got behind the defense for a 63-yard touchdown pass. That proved to be the decisive play of the game. Malone was in the game for starter Rich Judd, who was only 7-of-18 passing for 59 yards. He also fumbled twice. Malone only completed 4-of-12 passes, but he threw for 105 yards.

Grove City took an early 3-0 lead after a Judd fumble set up a 23-yard field goal. The Scots got on the board late in the second quarter, as a Shawn Marks interception set up a 27-yard field goal by Ben Arnold. Playing another strong game for Wooster was Jeff Elser, who rushed for 74 yards on 15 carries. Defensively, Mike Noble had 15 tackles.
