Game 4 - Denison

Mike Murray and the Scot defense held the high-powered Denison passing offense to just 188 total yards. Murray finished with an interception and three pass breakups.
The Scot football team has received recognition for its high-powered offense, and it is well deserved. But it has been the play of the defense this season that has been Wooster's strength. This was never more evident than against Denison, when the Scot defense nearly posted a shutout against one of the top offenses in the NCAC. Wooster posted a 16-7 victory, raising its record to 8-0 and extended Division III's second-longest winning streak to eight games.

The Scot offense had been overpowering in the first three games, averaging over 400 yards per game. But Saturday the offense had trouble in the red zone, scoring only touchdown, which came with 5:10 left in the fourth quarter. A sign of things to come during the game occurred on Wooster's first two drives, which both stalled inside the Denison 15-yard line. Ben Arnold made a 30-yard field goal but then missed a 29-yard attempt.

After that, the Scots could not do much offensively until the third quarter, when again they stalled inside the 15-yard line. Arnold connected on a 27-yard field goal to give the Scots a 6-0 lead.

That lead held until just under eight minutes remaining in the game. As Wooster was driving for a possible clinching score, Rich Judd was intercepted. Joe Dunham returned the interception all the way to the Wooster 26-yard line. But on a fourth and seven play from the 11-yard line, Seth Mastrine intercepted a Keith Schmid pass and returned it 51 yards to the Denison 47-yard line. Six plays later, Elser scored from two yards out. He had just run of 35 yards on the play before.

Denison proceeded to march down the field and score a touchdown with 2:46 left, but another Arnold field goal, this time from 29 yards, sealed the win.

Statistically, Wooster outgained Denison 349-188. Elser rushed for 75 yards, while Judd completed 19-of-37 passes for 183 yards. Brandon Good caught 12 passes for 108 yards. Mastrine finshed with six tackles and was named NCAC Defensive Player of the Week.
