That's what the Scot football team has to deal with after dropping a heartbreaking 40-39 double-overtime decision to Allegheny Saturday in front of possibly the largest John P. Papp Stadium crowd ever (4,500, plus more than 200 people standing on the hillside).
Wooster played brilliantly, amassing over 500 yards (512) of total offense against a team in which it has now lost to 12 straight times. Despite giving up a season-high 449 yards defensively, the defense came up big throughout the game, including a big defensive stand late in the game that sent the contest into overtime.
An already exciting game turned even more dramatic in overtime, as one slight mistake would cost a team the game. Unfortunately for the Scots, they made the mistake.
Allegheny had the first possession in overtime and scored quickly on a 21-yard touchdown pass from Chris Miller to Nathan Six. Wooster responded, however, as Brandon Good caught a five-yard scoring pass from Rich Judd.
Wooster got the ball first in the second overtime, and took a 39-33 lead when Rich Judd ran the ball in from the seven-yard line. However, Ben Arnold missed the extra point just right, his third miss of the game, and the Scots only had a six-point lead. Allegheny proceeded to score on Jeremy Snyder's two-yard run, and the extra-point by Kevin Bowser sealed the win.
Special teams, one of Wooster's usual strong points, came up short Saturday, at least on the kicking end. Bowser hit four field goals, including a 45 yarder in the third quarter, and hit all four of his extra points. The Scots not only missed three extra points, but had a fake field goal at the end of the first half fail from the Allegheny nine yard line.
Wooster had plenty of chances to win the game in regulation. After tying the game at 26-26 on a Jeff Elser two-yard run with 10:30 to play in the fourth quarter, the Scots drove the ball to the Allegheny eight-yard line. Judd was intercepted in the end zone, ending the drive. The Gators proceeded to move the ball down the field, but on fourth and four from the Wooster 23-yard line the Scots' stopped Allegheny on downs.
The difference on this day was the Gators' quarterback Chris Miller, a three-year starter at Division II South Dakota before transferring to Allegheny before the season. His all-around skills gained him 100 yards and one touchdown rushing and 191 yards and two touchdowns passing.
For Wooster, it did just about everything on offense. Judd completed 20-of-31 passes for 289 yards and three touchdowns while rushing for 38 yards. Elser gained 132 yards on the ground, while Brock Wanless added 53. Brandon Good caught five passes for 42 yards and two touchdowns, and tied a Division III record with a catch in 37 straight games.
Wooster, which dropped to 6-1 overall and 4-1 in the NCAC, travels to undefeated Wittenberg next week.
