Wooster Rolls Past Earlham 46-6

Reggie caught six passes for a career-high 128 yards against Earlham.

WOOSTER, Ohio - The College of Wooster football team scored five touchdowns of over 30 yards and rolled past visiting Earlham 46-6 this afternoon at John P. Papp Stadium in a North Coast Athletic Conference game.

Senior Reggie Ray (Norton, Ohio / Wadsworth) had a big day for the Fighting Scots, who improved to 6-1 overall and 3-1 in the conference. The 6-0, 175-pound wide receiver caught two 35-yard touchdown passes from junior Justin Abraham (North Olmsted, Ohio / St. Edward) in the second quarter and a 34-yard scoring pass from Abraham in the third quarter. Overall, Ray had six receptions for a career-high 128 yards.

Abraham was very efficient through the air, completing 16-of-26 passes for 238 yards and a career-best four touchdowns.

On the ground, Wooster was equally effective, pounding out 279 yards on 42 carries for an average of 6.6 yards per carry. Leading the way was senior Will Schober (Avon, Ohio Avon), who carried the ball 20 times for 122 yards, including a two-yard touchdown run in the third quarter. It marked the third time in the last four games Schober broke the 100-yard rushing mark. Freshman Rob Hooper (Gambier, Ohio / Mount Vernon) had a 31-yard touchdown run and 62 yards rushing on six carries, while junior Tim Conklin (Bay Village, Ohio / Bay) had a 37-yard scoring run on his only carry of the game.

Despite outgaining the Quakers 263-60 in the first half, Wooster only led 19-6 at halftime. Earlham, which fell to 2-4 overall and 1-2 in the NCAC, scored its only touchdown of the game with 4:20 to play in the first half when Matt Sipniewski caught a three-yard touchdown pass from Quincy Adams to cap a 10-play, 43-yard drive.

Defensively, the Scots completely stopped the Quakers' running game, limiting Earlham to zero yards rushing on 28 carries. The Quakers did gain 75 positive yards on the ground, but lost the same amount, thanks to seven sacks by the Wooster defense. Senior defensive end Brad Horst (Orrville, Ohio / Smithville) led the way for Wooster with 2.5 sacks, while classmate Seth Duerr (Bolivar, Ohio / Tuscarawas Valley) led all players with 16 tackles, including a sack and three tackles for losses. Also, Scot junior defensive back Seth Mastrine (Apple Creek, Ohio / Waynedale) recorded his eighth interception of the season, which set a school record and tied a conference record for most picks in a season.

Earlham's entire offense came through the air, as it completed 36-of-53 passes for 223 yards. Adams finished the game 30-of-46 for 182 yards and a touchdown, while Mike Kitchel caught 10 passes for 70 yards to lead the Quakers.
