Wooster Rebounds To Rout Kenyon
WOOSTER, Ohio - The College of Wooster rebounded from a 14-11 loss to Ohio Wesleyan last week to rout Kenyon 45-8 at John P. Papp Stadium in Wooster. The win improved Wooster's record to 3-1 overall and 1-1 in the North Coast Athletic Conference, while Kenyon fell to 0-3 overall and 0-1 in conference play. The story of the game was the play of freshman quarterback Jeff Spraggins (Garfield Heights), who tossed a school and NCAC record-tying five touchdowns passes in his first collegiate start. Spraggins replaced injured starter Justin Abraham (Olmsted Falls, Ohio), who was out with a shoulder injury. Four of Spraggins' touchdown passes went to sophomore Chris Cabot (Ridgewood, Ohio), which also tied a school and NCAC record. Spraggins finished the day 11-of-25 for 266 yards. Cabot caught six passes for 183 yards. The Scots jumped to a 14-0 lead after the first quarter, as Spraggins hit Cabot on a 48-yard scoring pass, followed by a 13-yard touchdown pass to senior David Yokley (Maple Heights). Spraggins connected twice more with Cabot in the second quarter, including a 46-yard scoring play that gave Wooster a 21-0 lead at the 13:33 mark of the second quarter. Junior Joe Zombek (Westlake) connected on a 40-yard field goal with 55 seconds remaining before halftime to give Wooster a 31-0 lead heading into the break. The Scots finished their scoring in the third quarter, as Cabot caught his fourth touchdown pass, this time 47 yards, at the 14:04 mark. Senior Will Schober (Avon) added a one-yard run to make it 45-0. Wooster's defense held the Lords under 100 yards of total offense until Kenyon's final possession of the game, when it went 73 yards on 15 plays for its lone touchdown of the day. Anthony Togliatti scored from two yards out with 3:49 to play, and the two-point pass play was good. Statistically, the Scots dominated the game, outgaining the Lords 595-149 in total offense. Wooster rushed for 267 yards, including 110 yards by Schober, who carried the ball only 12 times. |
