Wooster Football Routs Oberlin 71-0

OBERLIN, Ohio ‚ The College of Wooster football team recorded its 14th consecutive victory over Oberlin today, handing the Yeomen a 71-0 defeat in Oberlin, Ohio.

The Fighting Scots, who improved to 5-1 overall on the season, registered their second shutuout of the year, marking the first time since 1980 Wooster has had more than one shutout in the same season.

Wooster dominated the game from start to finish, outgaining Oberlin 530-20 in total offense. Wooster led 23-0 after the first quarter and 51-0 at halftime. Six different Wooster players found the end zone, including freshman running back Rob Hooper (Gambier, Ohio / Mount Vernon), who had three touchdown rushes, including a 64-yard scamper in the fourth quarter to cap the scoring.

After seeing its first drive of the game end in an interception in the end zone, Wooster proceeded to score a touchdown on each of its next seven offensive possessions. The Scots also scored on a blocked punt in the end zone, which was recovered by Oberlin for a safety, and on a 40-yard interception return for a touchdown by sophomore strong safety Scott McManamon (Bay Village, Ohio / Bay).

Wooster junior quarterback Justin Abraham (North Olmsted, Ohio / St. Edward) completed only eight passes in the first 30 minutes, but three of them went for touchdowns, including throws of 23 and 36 yards to sophomore split end Chris Cabot (West Lafayette, Ohio / Ridgewood), giving him eight touchdown catches this season. Sophomore Kyle Mueller (Westlake, Ohio / Westlake) had a touchdown reception and a touchdown run, while senior Will Schober (Avon, Ohio / Avon) and Hooper each had a touchdown run in the first half.

Defensively, the Scots allowed only one first down in the first half, and that came on a penalty. Junior Seth Mastrine (Apple Creek, Ohio / Waynedale), who set a school and North Coast Athletic Conference record with four interceptions in a win over Allegheny on Oct. 2, intercepted his seventh pass of the season, which tied a school record.

Overall, Wooster rushed for 348 yards on 50 carries. Leading the way was Hooper, who finished with a career-high 164 yards on 18 carries. Abraham finished 8-of-13 for 151 yards and three touchdowns, while Cabot had four catches for 74 yards and two touchdowns.

Adisa Chaney led the way for Oberlin (0-6) with 37 rushing yards on 23 carries.
