Winners of four in a row, The College of Wooster field hockey team will put its winning streak and perfect North Coast Athletic Conference record on the line twice this week. First, on Wednesday, Oct. 4, the Fighting Scots travel to fourth-place Denison University (3-6, 2-3 NCAC) to begin the second half of their NCAC schedule at 4:30 p.m. Wooster defeated the Big Red earlier this fall (Sept. 20) by a 3-1 margin at Cindy Barr Memorial Field. The Scots have a home game for the third consecutive Saturday, this Oct. 7, as they welcome rival and second-place Wittenberg University (7-3, 5-1 NCAC) to Cindy Barr Field for a 1 p.m. showdown. The Tigers are the only NCAC team Wooster has yet to face thus far this year. Prior to the 2005 season, either Wittenberg or Wooster won or shared the NCAC championship from 2000-04. The Scots lead the all-time series 31-22-4, posting a 2-1 record against the Tigers last fall when they split the regular season and then Wooster edged Wittenberg 2-1 in the NCAC Tournament semifinals.

Last Week: The Scots won a pair of matches, both NCAC contests, to remain the only team undefeated in NCAC play (6-0) and to improve to 8-2 overall.
On Sept. 28, Wooster avenged a 3-0 loss in last year?s NCAC Tournament championship game, coming from behind to defeat Oberlin College 5-3 at Oberlin, Ohio. Freshman Amanda Artman (Shaker Hts., Ohio / Shaker Heights) recorded a hat trick, the first of her career, in leading the Scots to victory. Oberlin had converted on its first two shots of the afternoon to take a two-goal lead midway through the first half. Artman?s initial goal came on a breakaway with 7:58 remaining before the break, and it remained 2-1 at halftime. The Yeowomen connected just 4:28 into the second for a two-goal margin again, but the Scots got right back within striking distance when Brittany Montgomery (Glens Falls, N.Y. / Glens Falls) scored on a penalty corner 3:44 later, with an assist from Miranda Leickly (Gahanna, Ohio / Columbus Academy). Wooster was still down 3-2 when the clock wound down under six minutes, however, the Scots were able to tie it up on their 19th corner of the day, with Leickly-to-Montgomery being the scoring combination again. With less than three minutes to go, Artman gave Wooster its first lead of the day (4-3), scoring off an Anlyn Addis (Ann Arbor, Mich. / Ann Arbor Pioneer) feed, and just 55 seconds later, Artman added another unassisted breakaway goal.
On Sept. 30, the Scots walloped Earlham College 7-0 at Cindy Barr Field. It was Artman, again, who shone for Wooster, scoring her second hat trick in as many games to lead the Scots? barrage. Already with a 1-0 lead on Artman?s initial goal of the day 4:48 into the action, Wooster?s offense would explode, rattling the cage five times from 21:31 to 14:45 in the first half. Addis slapped in two goals during that 6:46 stretch, Artman lit up the scoreboard for the second time that day, and Katy Baron (River Forest, Ill. / Oak Park & River Forest) and Montgomery also scored. It was 6-0 at halftime and the only goal of the second came less than five minutes in by Artman. Artman also had two assists, giving her an 8-point day. Addis had two helpers as well for a 6-point game, while others to contribute assists were Kaitlin Toner (Ormond Beach, Fla. / Kentucky Country Day) and Leickly.
