The College of Wooster field hockey team will be in search of its second win of the season when it travels to Richmond, Ind., this Saturday, Sept. 9, but more importantly, the Fighting Scots are aiming to open up North Coast Athletic Conference play on a positive note when they match-up against Earlham College (0-1, 0-0 NCAC) at 1 p.m. The Scots hold a significant advantage in the all-time series (34-2) and own a 23-game winning streak against the Quakers ?N a stretch that dates back to the 1993 season. Last year, Wooster prevailed 5-0 at home and 3-1 at Earlham. Also this weekend, the Scots will return home Sunday, Sept. 10, to face Transylvania University (1-1) in a non-conference game at 11 a.m. Transy and Wooster have only met twice in the past, with the Scots the victor in both contests, including a 3-1 win last season.
Last Week: Wooster split a pair of home games against non-conference
opponents to begin the season 1-1.
On Sept. 2, the Scots opened 2006 in style, blanking University of the South
by a 5-0 margin in damp conditions at Cindy Barr Memorial Field. Anlyn
Addis (Ann Arbor, Mich. / Pioneer) and Brittany Montgomery (Glens
Falls, N.Y. / Glens Falls) both scored a pair of goals in leading Wooster
to the victory, while Amanda Artman (Shaker Hts., Ohio / Shaker Heights)
also added a tally. The goals by Montgomery and Artman marked the first
of their Wooster career, (they?re both first-years), while Addis and Artman
each contributed one assist on the day. Defensively, Anne Leigh (Englewood,
Colo. / Cherry Creek) stood out for the Scots, shutting out the Tigers while
recording six saves.
On Sept. 3, Wooster dropped a tough 2-1 decision to visiting Centre College. The Scots looked to be in command of the game when Artman converted an Addis pass for a score, her second of the season, putting the hosts on top 1-0. Centre, though, answered nearly 20 minutes later, sneaking one past Leigh to knot the score with 6:54 remaining in the first half. The second half was a showcase of stingy defense from both sides, but the Colonels eventually found the back of the cage as the result of a penalty corner with 17:52 remaining. Leigh recorded six saves again.
NCAC Player of the Week: For her efforts (see above), freshman Brittany
Montgomery (Glens Falls, N.Y. / Glens Falls) was named North Coast Athletic
Conference Player of the Week for field hockey. |
