The 2006 North Coast Athletic Conference field hockey champions also excel in the classroom, as The College of Wooster and 11 of its players were recently honored for their academic work by the National Field Hockey Coaches Association.

Wooster was on the receiving end of an NFHCA “National Academic Team Award,” one of 86 in NCAA Div. III so recognized. The Fighting Scots qualified for it by compiling a grade-point average of 3.0 or above as a team during the fall semester.

Individually, 11 of Wooster’s 23 players were placed on the NFHCA Div. III National Academic Squad – senior forward Anlyn Addis (Ann Arbor, Mich. / Pioneer), sophomore forward/midfielder Alex Cotter (Summit, N.J. / Summit), senior back Gina Crough (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Mt. Lebanon), freshman goalkeeper Carly Herman (Ann Arbor, Mich. / Huron), sophomore forward/midfielder Jessica Lee (Ellicott City, Md. / Glenelg Country School), senior back Miranda Leickly (Gahanna, Ohio / Columbus Academy), senior goalkeeper Anne Leigh (Englewood, Colo. / Cherry Creek), freshman goalkeeper Izzy Maffetone (Setauket, N.Y. / Ward Melville), freshman midfielder/back Jill Pape (Newton, Mass. / Newton South), junior back Kate Persing (Canton, Conn. / Kimball Union Academy – N.H.), and sophomore midfielder Kaitlin Toner (Ormond Beach, Fla. / Kentucky Country Day School).

On the field, the Scots produced a 15-6 record during 2006, including a perfect 12-0 in conference play. It marked their third NCAC championship of the 2000s, also winning in 2001 and 2003 (three-way tie), but they missed out on a bid to the NCAA Div. III Tournament, losing in the finals of the conference tourney 2-1.
