Wooster Field Hockey Gives Coach Meese 100th Victory
The College of Wooster field hockey team dominated play against Earlham, out shooting the Quakers 26-3, but needed overtime to give head coach Brenda Meese her 100th victory at the school yesterday afternoon.
The Fighting Scots controlled the match from the start, but battled to a scoreless tie with the Quakers in the first half. Less than five minutes into the second half, sophomore midfielder Linnea Bloom scored off a pass from classmate Miriam Esber to give the Scots a 1-0 lead. With 9:32 left to play in regulation, Earlham's Sarah Mattox tied the game with an assist from Naomi Freeman.
As time was running down in the first overtime, sophomore Kate Dunne stole the ball from an Earlham player and raced down the field. She got all the way to the 25-yard marker and fed a beautiful pass to junior forward Amanda Bernardon, who fired a hard shot past the Quaker goalie with just 40 seconds showing on the clock.
In goal for Wooster, junior Melissa Goodwin faced just three shots en route to the victory.
