Wooster Field Hockey Evens Record at 2-2 With Win
The College of Wooster field hockey team evened its 1999 overall record to 2-2 with a 2-0 win at Kenyon in both teams first North Coast Athletic Conference match of the season.
The Scots dominated play throughout the first half, but suffered two major injuries in the process. Senior forward Jeannie Kosinski (Newark, Ohio / Maumee Valley Country Day) scored her second goal of the season off a pass from junior forward Amanda Bernardon (Chadds Ford, Pa. / The Tatnall School) with 23:03 remaining in the first half.
Eighteen minutes later, senior forward Maura Finn (Glenshaw, Pa. / Fox Chapel) tallied Wooster's second goal. Finn's score was assisted by sophomore midfielder Miriam Esber (Oxford, Ohio / Talawanda). Then the injury bug hit, as senior co-captain Jen Hayman (Wellesley, Mass. / Wellesley) went down with a knee injury and sophomore Emily White left the game with shin problems.
The Scots played Kenyon well in the second stanza despite the injuries. Wooster sealed the victory with stellar defensive effort from backs Sarah Adams (Columbus, Ohio / Bishop Watterson) and Kate Dunne (Oak Park, Ill. / Oak Park & River Forest), as well as junior goalkeeper Melissa Goodwin (Newburyport, Mass. / Newburyport). Goodwin recorded nine saves en route to her second win of the season.
"We played really well overall, especially on the defensive side of the field," said Wooster Head Coach Brenda Meese, who earned her 99th victory with the Scots. "Also, I was very happy with the players who came off the bench. They came in and really stepped up their level of play after Jen and Emily went down with injuries."
