Wooster Field Hockey Downs Visiting Wittenberg in Overtime
The College of Wooster—s field hockey team ran its North Coast Athletic Conference record to 4-0 with a victory over three-time defending-conference champion Wittenberg 4-3 in overtime Saturday afternoon at Wooster.
The Scots, who moved to 5-3 overall, won the game in the first overtime period when junior Amanda Bernardon (Chadds Ford, Pa.) scored an unassisted goal at the 11:05 mark. The goal erased what could have been a tough loss for Wooster, which allowed the Tigers to score the tying goal with just 43 seconds to play in regulation.
The Scots jumped out on top first, as sophomore Miriam Esber (Oxford, Ohio) scored just over two minutes into the match. Wittenberg tied the game with a goal at the 14-minute mark, but sophomore Maria Liszkay (Gahanna, Ohio) put Wooster back ahead with a goal off of a draw control that was assisted by senior Jeannie Kosinski (Newark, Ohio). The lead was shortlived, however, as the Tigers scored less than a minute later to tie the game at two heading into halftime.
The score remained tied until only 15:19 remained in regulation, when senior Maura Finn (Glenshaw, Pa.) scored with an assist from sophomore Emily White (Princeton, W. Va.) to give the Scots a 3-2 lead.
Junior Melissa Goodwin (Newburyport, Mass.) had another strong game in goal, stopping eight shots for Wooster.
