The College of Wooster field hockey team, which is aiming for its first conference title since 1986, made a strong statement to the rest of its North Coast Athletic Conference foes in the league-opener on Sunday (Sept. 3) with a resounding 7-1 win over Earlham in Richmond, Ind.

Granted, the Quakers were 3-15 overall and 0-12 in the NCAC in 1999, but Wooster struggled with them last fall, needing double overtime to win each meeting 2-1.

The Scots made sure that was not going to happen again right from the outset, as Wooster scored three times within the first 14 minutes of the contest. Junior Emily White accounted for two of those goals and assisted on the other, which was scored by senior Amanda Bernardon. The Scots struck again late in the first half when sophomore Lindsey Boardman put the ball past Earlham goalie Danielle Cranin off a feed from White to make it a 4-0 game at the break.

It was more of the same in the second stanza, as Wooster scored just 1:48 into that half on a goal by junior Miriam Esber off passes from freshman Katie McCoy and White. The Quakers finally got on the scoreboard midway through the second on a goal by Sarah Mattox, but the Scots went on to tack on two more scores by freshman Liz Day and Esber, assisted by freshman Nicole Pritchard and junior Kate Dunne, respectively.

Scot senior Melissa Goodwin had an easy day in goal, as she made two saves en route to the victory, while Cranin came up with 14 saves.

Wooster will continue its early season NCAC schedule with a match-up at Oberlin on Wednesday (Sept. 6), starting at 4:30 p.m.
