Field Hockey Falls To Nationally-Ranked Opponent
» Box Score
In preparation for a run at the 2000 North Coast Athletic
Conference championship, The College of Wooster field hockey team continued
its challenging non-conference schedule on Tuesday (Sept. 12), as it
traveled to Erie, Pa., for a game against Mercyhurst College.
The Lakers, who are tied for fifth in the most recent NCAA Division
II rankings, prevailed 3-1.
Mercyhurst scored just over five minutes into the match on a goal
by Danielle Jerschefske, assisted by Sarah D'Emilio, but that would be all
the offense in the opening half, as the Scots kept it close.
The Lakers opened the second stanza with a pair of quick goals from
Fran Hollembaek and Jeanna Hartman to take a commanding 3-0 lead. With
20:41 remaining in regulation, sophomore Lindsey Boardman put Wooster in
the scoring column with an assist off the stick of senior Amanda Bernardon.
Facing a total of 26 Mercyhurst shots, senior Melissa Goodwin
played well in goal as she came up with 14 saves on the day. The Lakers'
Summer Kraatz made one save.
Wooster, which had its three-game win streak snapped and fell to
3-2, will play its first of seven straight NCAC contests on Saturday (Sept.
16) when it hosts Kenyon at 11 a.m.
