Some athletes just have a knack for coming up with the big play in crucial situations.

Amanda Bernardon, a senior attacker on The College of Wooster field hockey team, proved once again on Wednesday (Sept. 6) that she is one of those players that rises to the occasion, scoring the decisive goal in Wooster's 3-2 conference road win over Oberlin.

Bernardon's score with 4:22 left in regulation turned out to be her seventh game-winning goal since the beginning of last season - a span of 21 games.

The match was close throughout with Wooster never being able to gain a two-goal advantage, despite outshooting the Yeowomen 30-10.

Junior Emily White, who was credited with an assist on Bernardon's game-winner, gave the Scots a 1-0 lead early on off an assist from junior Maria Liszkay. Oberlin tied the game with 19:15 left in the opening stanza on a goal off a penalty stroke, but Wooster answered just 43 seconds later with a score by sophomore forward Lindsay Boardman off a pass from freshman midfielder Katie McCoy.

It remained 2-1 until the Yeowomen converted one of their seven penalty corners of the match at the 21:59 mark of the second half. Then, Bernardon provided the heroics, as the Scots improved to 2-1 overall and 2-0 in the North Coast Athletic Conference.

In goal, senior Melissa Goodwin stopped eight Oberlin shots on the afternoon.

Wooster opens their home schedule and returns to non-league play next with a match-up against Brockport State on Saturday, Sept. 9, at 1 p.m.
