The College of Wooster field hockey team's bid for a North Coast
Athletic Conference title may have taken a major hit on Wednesday afternoon
(Sept. 20), as the Scots were upset at home by Ohio Wesleyan University 2-1.
The Battling Bishops, who entered the contest with a 1-4 record,
including a 1-2 league slate, fell behind early when sophomore Lindsey
Boardman fired a shot past goalie Summer Kraatz just 6:45 into the match.
Boardman, who has now scored a goal in each of her last three games, was
assisted on the play by junior Miriam Esber.
At the 11:20 mark of the first half, Ohio Wesleyan evened the match
at one on an unassisted goal by Amy Davis, while the deciding score was an
unassisted goal off the stick of Lisa Payfer with 19:42 remaining in
regulation.
In goal, senior Melissa Goodwin came up with four saves for the
Scots, while Kraatz made seven stops.
Statistically, each team got off 11 shots, however, Wooster
outcornered the Bishops 8-6.
Despite the loss, the Scots have a chance to get back on track
towards their goal of a conference championship on Sunday (Sept. 24) when
they meet first-place Witternberg (6-0, 4-0 NCAC). That match-up will take
place in Springfield, Ohio, starting at 3 p.m.
